FROM MORNA

Weekly emails will come on Fridays going forward.  Thank you, Don, for continuing to serve the choir in this important way. It is very important that all singers read each email and take action on surveys etc at your earliest convenience.  Your cooperation in this makes life much easier for everyone behind the scenes.

Attendance is critical to a successful EnChor, and I am delighted that virtually everyone has made the switch to Tuesdays.  Remember to inform your section leader about all anticipated absences.  Basses: Barry is tracking attendance going forward, rather than Paul Birch. Using their information, I will determine if a singer who has missed a number of rehearsals will be invited to sing in upcoming concerts. We will shortly be updating our official Long Term Absence Policy and procedure. Stay tuned!

The choir’s Google Calendaris your resource for planning.  Please bookmark it and use it.  If you have access problems, please reach out to Jay (thank you, Jay!)

Thank you to more than a dozen EnChor singers who gave an afternoon and their skills to conductors who are honing their craft through the BCCF’s “Choral Da Capo” summer course last Sunday. Your time and skill were very much appreciated. Willi Zwozdesky, ED of the BCCF, tells me that our participation is something they speak about proudly in grant applications and reports.  Huge thanks to Valerie for being our in-choir coordinator of this again this year.

Thank you to the indomitable EnChor librarian John Culter who is working to ensure you have scores in your folder on September 10.  And to Barry who is filling in for him at the first rehearsal.

Tuesday, September 10 is approaching and I am looking forward to seeing and hearing you in our new venue of the Unitarian Church of Vancouver!  Please arrive a bit early to the first rehearsal. The address is 949 West 49th Avenue on the Northeast corner of 49th and Oak.  We are in the sanctuary building.  Note that the entrance to the free parking lot off Oak Street is permanently closed for safety reasons.  You must enter from Fremlin Street between 48th and 49th Avenues.  There is also plenty of street parking.

If you would like to be considered to sing a different voice part, please email me (mornaedmundson@telus.net) and we will arrange for an in-person chat/sing before 10am at the first rehearsal.

Onward into a great season of being together!

FROM CATHY BAYLEY

Welcome back to another year of great singing and fellowship!

I hope you all had a wonderful summer.  I know we’re all looking forward to getting back to singing, now on Tuesdays at Vancouver Unitarian Church.

AN EXCITING OPPORTUNITY FOR ENCHOR!  Please complete the survey by Tuesday!

The BC Choral Federation hosts events that promote choral singing around the province. One of these is a 2-day Seniors’ Chorfest aimed at the approximately 20 seniors’ choirs in BC. At this event choirs come together to rehearse as a massed choir for 2 days, ending with an evening concert.  Morna was the Guest Conductor at a successful event in Kamloops in 2013. You may also remember that EnChor, under the leadership of Maggie Burr, hosted a very successful Chorfest “Spring into Song” some years ago.
The BCCF has approached EnChor to host the Seniors’ Chorfest to be held in April 2025. Morna feels that hosting such an event would reflect well on EnChor as a leader in the choral community and it would be enjoyable to spend time with other seniors who love to sing. Every member of EnChor would not need to participate, but we hope that many would.  We also hope some EnChor members would volunteer to help out with the event.  This would take the form of a small core Organizing Committee, as well as people willing to help out as the need arises. This group would work closely with the BCCF and would receive a lot of support from its administration.
The board has approved covering all registration fees for participating EnChor members. But before committing to host, the board would like your input.
Please complete the following short survey before Tuesday, September 3rd.  Here is the link to the survey.

EnChor AGM:  Tuesday, September 24th, 2024

Official notice is still to come but please mark your calendars for this date and plan to stay after the rehearsal for the AGM.  This meeting will not be longer than 30 minutes but it is very important to have a significant number of EnChor members in attendance.

 CONCERT DATES for 2024-2025:

As Morna noted, the Google Calendar is every EnChor member’s best friend but just in case you have trouble with it, here are the concert dates for next year.  Please note that while our rehearsals will be at the Vancouver Unitarian Church, our concerts are still at Pacific Spirit United Church (PSUC). Also please note that the dress rehearsals will be on Saturdays at PSUC.  In order to sing at the concert, one is expected to attend the dress rehearsals, so please let your section leader know if this is a problem for you.

Saturday, November 16th, 2024     Dress Rehearsal              10:00am to 12:30pm                PSUC Sanctuary

Sunday, November 17th, 2024        Fall Concert          3:00pm to 4:30pm    PSUC Sanctuary

Saturday, December 14th, 2024     Dress Rehearsal             10:00am to 12:30pm  PSUC Sanctuary

Sunday, December 15th, 2024         Christmas Concert    3:00pm to 4:30pm   PSUC Sanctuary

Saturday, April 26th, 2025              Dress Rehearsal                  10:00am to 12:30pm PSUC Sanctuary

Sunday, April 27th 2025                     Spring Concert     3:00pm to 4:30pm    PSUC Sanctuary

Finally, Valerie has already arranged a number of outreach concerts for the choir and these are also in the Google Calendar.

See you at the Vancouver Unitarian Church on September 10th!

Cathy

Message from the (outgoing) treasurer about membership fees:

I hope you’ve all had a good summer and are looking forward to our first rehearsal in our new rehearsal venue on Tues., Sept. 10th.

Membership fees for the upcoming year will be due soon.  The board has decided to raise the fees this year (and each year going forward) by 2%.  As our expenses go up, we feel that this gradual increase in dues is necessary.  This means that the dues this year will be $408.00.

It is expected that each member will pay the full fee for the year to remain a member in good standing; this applies equally to those who might plan to be away from the choir for part of the year.  Under extenuating circumstances financial adjustments may be considered.

You may pay in one installment, or divide the payments into two installments of $204.00, one payable now and the other payable by the end of January.   Payment can be made by cheque (made out to EnChor Choir) and given to Trish Smith at rehearsal. If you prefer to do an e-transfer send it to treasurer@enchor.ca and it will be deposited directly into the EnChor account.

PLEASE NOTE:  THIS IS A NEW EMAIL ADDRESS FOR ALL TRANSFERS TO ENCHOR CHOIR. (treasurer@enchor.ca)

PLEASE WAIT TO MAKE YOUR PAYMENT AFTER SEPTEMBER 1, THE BEGINNING OF OUR NEW FISCAL YEAR.

June 3, 2024

From Morna

I am very much looking forward to our final performance of the year this Saturday, June 1 at Christ Church Cathedral as invited guests of the VSO Day of Music.  It’s always fun to sing for so many new people.  There’s one small wrinkle and that is that I have had COVID for 4 days. I will be testing again Friday morning.  If I am negative, I will be with you.  If not, Janet Warren is delighted to step in and lead you.  She would also take the Friday morning rehearsal.

As you know, music hand-in must be complete by the end of this gig. Many thanks to John Culter, who will cheerfully accept every piece of EnChor music you find in your house.  Please give a thorough look.

Exciting news for our September start is that we will be in a new rehearsal venue: the Unitarian Church of Vancouver at 49th and Oak (949 West 49th Avenue). We will be in their well-lit sanctuary with padded chairs, a Steinway grand, and lots of free parking in their lot. Rehearsals will be on TUESDAYS from 10am – noon.

All 24/25 rehearsal and concert dates are now in our Google calendar. Please have a look and be sure to let your section leader know by June 30 whether you will be with us again next year.

Lastly, I now have the details for the optional July sing with the Christ Church Cathedral Choir and members of EnChor, Elektra, and Chor Leoni.  If you want to participate, you must attend all three of the dates below.  All events are at Christ Church Cathedral – 690 Burrard Street.

  • Tuesday, July 2nd, 7:00 – 9:30PM casual rehearsal, read through and social time
  • Thursday, July 4th 7:30 – 9:30PM formal rehearsal
  • Sunday, July 7th, 9:15AM Call Time for 10:30AM service, should be done around 12:00 noon | Reception/Picnic to follow.

If you are planning to participate, please click here by June 4.  The organizers need numbers of guest singers to organize music. Thanks!

EnChor Weekly Announcements
May 13, 2024

From Morna

Thank you to everyone who sang Friday afternoon for the conference downtown and last night at Elim Village. They were both strong performances for enthusiastic audiences. Valerie, you have had a lot of details to contend with in the past six weeks. Thank you SO much for the exemplary job you are doing.

Based on the March 4 survey results, I have updated the roster and repertoire list for the VSO Day of Music performance on June 1, which is our next and final one of the season.  Please check the calendar listing.

Please read carefully:

We have decided that the season has come to a great conclusion with a great deal of singing in recent weeks.  So we are cancelling the May 24 rehearsal. Our next and final rehearsal of 23/24 will be Friday morning, May 31 only for those singing the VSO Day of Music performance the next day.

(Section leaders, I would appreciate it if you could also send around an email shortly before May 24 reinforcing this message).

It is very important for MUSIC HAND-IN that those not singing on June 1 get all their music to someone who is before May 31.  Please organize that now, as there are 2 full weeks to make that transfer.  I do not want the cancellation of the May 24 rehearsal to make John Culter’s life difficult.  We will collect all music not in the VSO gig on May 31 and the VSO rep at Christ Church Cathedral following the performance. It would be great if we can have a few extra hands on deck to help with sorting and carrying.  Thank you!

As I will be in Montreal for the Podium conference, I am not planning to send a weekly email on Monday, May 20.  There may be other messages from others.  Happy Victoria Day and see you soon!

From Morna

Lots to share today.  Thanks for reading thoroughly.

First off, thank you so much for a very confident and well-performed concert yesterday.  I know you all felt the absence of one-third of the choir and rose admirably to the occasion.  Thanks to all who helped out in ways beyond singing, including Garnet on clarinet (beautiful!), Evelyn on violin, the riser crew, and the Front of House crew.  To all who found themselves ill this past week, we hope you have a speedy recovery and will be back with us soon.

In our remaining month of choir this season, we have another 3 rehearsals and 3 performances.  Please be a frequent visitor to our Google calendar to make sure you are in the right place at the right time with the right music.  Thank you so much to Valerie for her incredibly detailed work behind the scenes for all these performances.

This Friday, May 10, we will welcome our scholarship winner, Man Le, who will take us in a warmup.  Then, with pianist Karen Lee Morlang, we will be rehearsing the music for the afternoon conference performance at the Wall Centre and the music for the Elim Village performance on Saturday evening, May 11. We will stop rehearsal 10 minutes early to accommodate those needing to eat and get downtown.

Then about half of us go downtown for the short conference performance in the early afternoon.

Saturday night, May 11 we are in Surrey at Elim Village. Please check the rep list carefully, noting that O Love and O How Glorious, may not be in your folder at the moment.  We will have the music for the 2 hymn singalongs on Friday morning.

Thank you all for filling in the survey about our last 2 gigs.  Maureen and Hyo, I don’t think we heard from you.  If you are able to join the evening of May 11, that would be awesome.  We are short of sopranos and tenors.  You can email me directly at mornaedmundson@telus.net.

Note that there is no rehearsal on Friday, May 17 but we all do rehearse on May 24.  Those doing the VSO Day of Music only will rehearse on Friday, May 31.

Next Season Schedule

As you know, starting in September, our rehearsals are moving to Tuesday mornings from 10am – noon.  For those planning vacations next year, here are our three concert dates.  We will be holding our dress rehearsals the day before, on Saturday mornings.

CONCERT: Sunday, November 17, 2024 – Fall Concert
Dress Rehearsal: Saturday, November 16 10am – 12:30pm

CONCERT 2: Sunday, December 15, 2024 – An EnChor Christmas
Dress Rehearsal: Saturday, December 14 10am – 12:30pm

CONCERT 3: Sunday, April 27, 2025 – Spring Concert
Dress Rehearsal: Saturday, April 26 10am – 12:30pm

Other important dates:

Tuesday, September 10 – first rehearsal of the year
Tuesday, December 10 – last rehearsal until January
Tuesday, January 7 – first rehearsal of 2025
Tuesday, May 27 – last rehearsal before summer break

I know some of you have had to shift things to accommodate this change to Tuesdays. Your efforts are much appreciated. If you know now that you are not able to sing with us next year, please inform your section leader right away, and they will inform me.

See you Friday morning!

FROM CATHY BAYLEY

So many thanks to everybody who sang in last night’s concert. We didn’t have as large an audience as usual but they were certainly appreciative. You had many happy compliments from people as they left the church. “Great concert, as usual!” I had the opportunity to sit back and enjoy it from the back of the church and thoroughly enjoyed all the songs. Even though we were missing a few people, the balance was really great. I particularly enjoyed the way everybody got into the spirit of You Make Me Feel So Young. Congratulations!

Thank you to everyone who sang at Cedar Springs PARC on Friday. We were warmly received.  Gail, who was not feeling well that day, is now at home, stable, and in good care.

Fields of Gold is, of course, this Sunday evening, May 5.  I am very much looking forward to performing this beautiful music for our friends, families, and extended audience.  Let’s share our joy of singing together. Please continue to promote the concert in all the ways that you do.  You can share this link: https://enchor.ca/concert/fall-2023-concert-2-2-2-3/

Remember it’s a 7:00 start, with a choir call time of 6:10 sharp on the risers.  All details are in the calendar.

Friday morning, we have our Dress Rehearsal in the sanctuary from 10am – 12:30pm.  Note the late release time.  I will make sure you are not standing the whole time.

Now I would like to ask you to put your music in concert order today and dedicate 30 minutes or more every day between now and Friday to sing through everything.  The better you know it, the more you can watch and listen, and the more impactful our performance will be.  Note that I have added Try to Remember as a singalong. Click HERE for the score.  Here is the final program order.

EnChor Weekly Announcements

April 22, 2024

From Morna

Thank you for reading the weekly email.  We are a VERY busy choir at the moment and the only way we can stay on top of everything is if everyone keeps themselves fully informed.

What a great evening of shared music on Friday night at A Choral Feast 2!  Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your beautiful singing.  I was very proud of us.  I have written to thank Kari Turunen and the Vancouver Chamber Choir’s ED and received kind words from both of them.  Great exposure for EnChor, to be sure!

Onward and upward in our busy few months!

This Friday morning, please welcome Janet Warren to take you through the first half of the rehearsal.  I will come in from a VSO rehearsal as soon as I can.  Please make time to practice all the pieces shown in your weekly rehearsal grid, including Now is the Month of Maying.  You know where your personal challenges are!

For those who are doing the Cedar Springs PARC performance Friday afternoon, the repertoire is now up in the Google Calendar.  Please check both the roster and the repertoire to be prepared so we have no surprises that afternoon. One of the singalongs (Over the Rainbow) can be sung unison or, if you have or want to print Ken’s arrangement, click HERE.

Advance notice that the board and I have decided to cancel the May 17 rehearsal.  Not only will I be away at a conference, but it’s the long weekend ahead and many will be away anyway.  We will resume on Friday, May 24.  The last rehearsal of the year will be on Friday, May 31.

My thanks to the board for all their hard work and to all singers who are able to fulfil our many outreach concerts.

See you Friday!

FROM CHRIS SALLIS

Hello everyone,

Greg Skidmore (who has sung with the Tallis Scholars) has been running a week-long workshop in Ontario for a few years and is now starting one here.  Last summer, he ran one here for a weekend, which was an exceptional opportunity for small and large ensemble singing, private lessons (!), some instrumental instruction and a real immersion into both sacred and secular music from the Renaissance.  For more information, please have a look at their website:

I heard you had a good and productive time with Ken and Stephen on Friday at the sectionals.  If you were not in attendance that day, please do some extra homework on our concert music, paying closest attention to Rise Up My Love, Terre-Neuve, Fogarty’s Cove, The Tree of Peace, and memorization of Now is the Month of Maying.

This Friday, April 19, is a busy day with a regular rehearsal and then meeting at 3:45pm at St. Andrew’s-Wesley United Church for the evening concert. I have updated the arrival and seating instructions in the Google calendar. You might want to carpool downtown, as you will be there for about 5 hours.  Think about when and what you are going to eat.

This Friday, we will start rehearsal with Tabula Rasa and Rise Up My Love.  After that, it’s Terre-Neuve, Moonset, and Now is the Month of Maying. Then Sure on This Shining Night before we say an early goodbye to anyone not doing the evening concert.  Finally, we’ll rehearse O, How Glorious and our solo set for the evening: Wind Rising in the Alleys (memorized except brand new singers), Sure on This Shining Night, and You Make Me Feel So Young.

This Friday, you will have the fun experience of being under the leadership of Ken for one hour and Stephen Smith for the other as we do sectional work. They each have eight pieces to work on with you and will spend the most time on the newer, more challenging pieces.  Please think in advance about spots that might want attention and don’t be shy to ask!

The logistics of Friday require everyone to read this carefully in order to have a productive time together:

You will spend the entire rehearsal period in your tenor/bass group (sanctuary all morning) or soprano/alto group (East/West Hall all morning).  Please go directly to that venue for the 10am start and don’t visit across the street during break. We would simply lose a ton of time cat-herding.  I have asked for the break to be 10:55 – 11:05.  Please help us keep on track so the second conductor gets the full time allotted.

Now is also the time I must ask each of you to commit to working on your music between rehearsals.  We are making good progress on everything, but Rise Up My Love still feels like people are feeling their way.  Ditto for Terre-Neuve. Own your part, own what comes over page turns.  Make it flow in your voice and brain, and we can definitely do this.  But that can’t happen in a few minutes of a few Fridays.  The order of the concert is the same as the weekly rehearsal grid, if you want to start seeing as you practice how it will all flow. Thank you for being the best EnChor we can be for all performances, from the care homes to Fields of Gold on May 5.

On Friday, April 19, we have a morning rehearsal as usual and a late afternoon/evening gig with the Vancouver Chamber Choir. I will structure that rehearsal such that the people not singing in the evening can leave a bit early.  But do come as we will be working on other May 5 rep as well.

Have a good week!

Pacific Spirit Choir will be performing Duruflé’s Requiem and other works from the French repertoire, on Sunday, April 21, at 3:00 PM at West Vancouver United Church.  Kevin Zakresky now conducts PSC, and a number of Enchor singers are also singing for PSC:  Heather, Hazel, Gail, Graeme, Jay, as well as Deborrah Keyes.  We can sell you paper tickets, or you can buy them online.

More information is available at www.pacificspiritchoir.com and tickets can be purchased  by clicking here.

It’s shaping up to be an excellent concert with interesting and well-known repertoire (for the most part!).
