From Morna

Lots to read today. Thanks for paying close attention to everything coming up.

Thank you for a very enjoyable and productive recording session on Friday morning.  I think this will be another offering to care homes that we can be proud of. Thanks in advance to the Video Committee that is going to swing into action again on matters of production and distribution.

Thanks also to everyone who sang for Ailsa’s service.  Our presence there was much appreciated by the family.

Looking ahead to the next few weeks, we have regular rehearsals on the November repertoire now. Thank you, John Culter, for getting all this music out and to the team of John Smit and Jay for continuing to offer Zoom. This Friday we will be working on Love is Love is Love is Love, The Pasture, Take This ThreadTell My Ma, Soli Deo Gloria, and Pastime with Good Company.  The first and last on that list are pieces we are singing with our guest choir, the Lord Byng Chamber Choir and their director, Lisa Lan on November 20.  On November 10th at 4:30pm some of us will attend their rehearsal at their school to rehearse those two pieces. This is optional. Details are in our Google calendar and I will remind you closer to the time.

In a few weeks time, we have our Retreat which is an extended rehearsal day at the usual venue with catered lunch.  We go from 10am – 3pm.  I’m excited to let you know that Kari Turunen, Artistic Director of the Vancouver Chamber Choir, is our guest clinician for one hour in the afternoon.  Please do everything possible to be able to stay through to 3pm.

Looking ahead to our new “Christmas with EnChor” concert on Sunday afternoon, December 18, we are hoping this will be an annual affair, with funds raised at the door benefiting the Food Bank. In addition to choral rep and singalong carols, I would like to feature two “acts” from the talents of individual choir members and small groups in each year’s concert.  To that end, following rehearsal on November 11 and 18, I will be holding auditions for those wishing to be considered.  You have to audition on the piece you would perform in the concert.  Although I am planning only to program two, I hope to hear lots of people so I have a sense of whether we can sustain this aspect over several years. Please email me if you would like an audition spot, specifying Nov 11, 18, or either.

From Morna

I’m looking forward to seeing many of you at PSUC this Wednesday, October 5 at 12:15pm for a warmup and runthrough before Ailsa’s 1pm service.  You will need the two pieces of music in your black folder (Brahms Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen and We Rise Again.)  Apparel is what I call the “red” outfits – silk ponchos, black shirts for the men, etc.  Please check with Sandra if unsure what that means. Note: we will be singing with black masks. Nancy will bring along a supply for those who don’t have one.

Please arrive by 12:10 so we can get started singing right at 12:15. I will be learning from Ailsa’s son Peter the details of when we sing in the service.

I’m happy to see excellent attendance expected on Friday, October 7 for the Christmas recording session. If your plans change, please notify your section leader. Please be a few minutes early for the 10am start.  We will wrap at noon. Our engineer is Grant Rowledge. Thank you to Roy Campbell and Ken for playing organ and piano respectively.  I plan to record in this order:

  1. Away in a Manger
  2. We Wish You a Merry Christmas
  3. Joy to the World
  4. O Come, All Ye Faithful
  5. Hark, the Herald Angels Sing
  6. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
  7. Deck the Hall

Friday is an audio recording only, so you do not need to wear choir apparel. Please dress comfortably in layers of clothing that does not make sound when you move. We are singing masked – the colour of the mask doesn’t matter. It is expected to be a very nice, summery day, so don’t overdress. Bring your folder to hold the music in, a pencil and a water bottle.  Wear comfortable shoes as you will be standing longer than usual.  We will have a break in the middle of the session and people who need a stool throughout are welcome to do so – please bring your own stool if possible.  There are also a couple at the church.  Looking forward to creating this gift for our care homes!

FROM MORNA

This Friday is a busy one, as we will have the final rehearsal on the music for Ailsa’s memorial service (Wednesday, October 5, see below) and the Christmas recording for the care home singalong (Friday, October 7 usual time but in the sanctuary).  In addition to those nine pieces, we’ll work on Soli Deo Gratia and Tell My Ma.

Because Friday is Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, I will invite anyone who wants to tell us which First Nations lands they live on, to do so following the warmup.  I’ll go first.  We are all on Coast Salish territory but, within that, there are many nations.

This week, I will ask for a clear show of hands of who is planning to sing at Ailsa’s celebration, so please consult your calendar in advance.  Our call time is 12:10 and we should be finished no later than 2:30.

See you Friday!

EnChor tote bags:

We still have some of the lovely EnChor tote bags for sale.  They are $25 each and available at rehearsals.

Mask orders:

Paul Guiton has sent in  an order for masks from Canada Strong and expects they will arrive within the next couple of weeks.  For those who placed an order with Paul, you may pay by cash, cheque or e-transfer when you receive your masks.  There was no tax charged and no delivery fee, so the amount is $15.90 for a package of ten masks, or $7.95 for five masks.  Paul will let us know when the masks arrive.  Many thanks for looking after this order, Paul!!

Upcoming Elektra Women’s Choir Concert

A note from Morna: as some of you know, my other choir, Elektra, has major concerts this weekend at Pacific Spirit United Church: The Lost Words: A Spell Book.  This is a very special project based on a very special book about nature. I encourage you to read all about it here, and watch an introductory video here

From Morna

I enjoyed rehearsal Friday and the music we are making together.  I will keep reminding you all to be an active part of shaping our tone, living in that beautiful place of simultaneously and intentionally producing the tone and actively listening and modifying.

This week we welcome Ken back and will rehearse six of the carols which will be recorded on Friday morning, October 7.  In terms of new music, we’ll sing Home and the Heartland and Take this Thread (letter E to m51).

Home and the Heartland divisi: I would like to hear the whole tenor section together on the opening solo.  Then, at 21, sopranos and altos in 3 parts: Top/Middle/Bottom. As in other rep, when there are only 2 notes, you revert to S/A.  I realize this gives an extra mental workout to those sop2s and alto1s!  Due to masking, I will likely put five or six sopranos and altos together for the solo at 43.  Be ready to raise your hand to be part of that.  Or we might go with everyone.

Ailsa’s Service

Wednesday, October 5   1:00pm

Pacific Spirit United Church

Choir call time in uniform with black folder: 12:10 in sanctuary

There are a few stools there – bring your own if needed. I don’t know yet if the 2 pieces are performed back-to-back

We (and all guests) will also be singing hymns

Uniform:

  • women – colorful silk poncho with black dress pants, black hose and shoes and modest gold earrings.
  • men – black dress shirt with EnChor red tie, black slacks and black socks and shoes.
  • We will all be wearing black face masks (bring your own).

This Friday, we will sing We Rise Again in anticipation of Ailsa’s service.  As Ann is aware, I’ve decided the opening solo should be the whole soprano section due to the challenges of masking. If you are new to the Brahms Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen, we will not sing this until the 30th, so please do some listening and learning on your own between now and then. Don Blake has added part specific parts for this piece to the “Current Repertoire” section of the web site.

From Morna

How great to see and hear you all again! Thanks to all who helped make the rehearsal happen, including John C for music, Garnet and Nancy for setup and COVID safety, John S for the Zoom, and everyone else who stepped in to haul chairs, etc.

I think by now you all know that our wonderful, founding pianist, Ailsa Zaenker passed away 10 days ago.  She was such a force in our choir and will be missed.  Although she had serious mobility issues, she made it to our spring concert and was all smiles.  We have been asked to sing at her memorial service on Wednesday, October 5 at 1pm at Pacific Spirit United Church.  More details to come, at which time we will ask who is available to sing. Ailsa’s son, Peter, sent this lovely 3-minute video that includes a few photos of her with us:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZ2pc2tH6e0&t=25s&ab_channel=PeterZaenker

We are diving in with both feet this fall, and there will be additional music to pick up this Friday, so plan to arrive a few minutes early.

I particularly want to draw your attention to a beautiful new piece in your folders by Vancouver composer Katerina Gimon.  Some of you might have heard an orchestral work by her in yesterday’s “In Performance” on CBC Radio, performed by the National Youth Orchestra of Canada.  Take This Thread will feature Evelyn with us on violin, and will be the main work on our November 20 concert. Please find time to read the introduction inside the score and have a listen to this virtual choir performance by some of the finest mixed choirs across Canada: https://youtu.be/o8gOlZnNcPw?t=201   The challenges will be the rhythms and the French, so the better prepared you are, the more easily it will come together.  Divisi is pretty obvious, but there are a few places with 3-way splits, so please mark your score (“Top, Middle, Bottom” per this chart) https://enchor.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/EnChor-Roster-and-Divisi-Sept-2022.pdf.

  • sopranos and altos: 23, 26, 27, 32, 33, 58
  • tenors and basses: 33

Wherever there are 3 notes for women or men, this Top/Middle/Bottom applies only to moments with 3 notes.  If it goes back to, for example, S and A only in the same bar, make the switch mid-bar. For this week, we will work up to letter D only on Take This Thread.

I am not sending you the weekly rehearsal grid until we settle on the music for Ailsa’s service on October 5.  For this Friday, September 16, the rehearsal also includes Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Deck the Hall, We Wish You a Merry Christmas and a couple of things you will get on Friday.

Have a good week!  Thank you, Don Blake, for continuing to be our communications hub!

Information about Canada Strong Masks.

As we have mentioned, the 3-D singers’ masks that we have been providing are no longer available in black.  I am enclosing a link to the Canada Strong website, where you can purchase a package of 10 CA-N95 Black Respirator Masks for $15.90 (plus shipping). They come in three sizes, small, medium or large and are made in Canada.   The mask I showed on Friday was a medium.  There is lots of good information on the website.  https://canadastrong.ca/

From Sandra

There will be a brief meeting after our rehearsal to address a wardrobe concern that has been brought to my attention.

From BCCF

BCCF is very excited to be part of this unique event on September 24, and we look forward to welcoming participants from local choirs.

This is an event taking place outdoors at Brunswick Point in Ladner, and linked to ecology and nature, the First Peoples, myth, and light. It takes place during the Culture Days, and specifically on the Equilux, the day on which night and day have the same number of hours. People will be able to take part in various parts of the event – 1-8pm for the full afternoon / 4:30-7:30pm for the core Procession / 4:30-6pm for the Welcome (appropriate for people with mobility concerns).

For details, check the BCCF website at https://bcchoralfed.com/singing-opportunity-mothlike-silvery-blue-sept-24-in-ladner/

I hope that some of your singers will come to walk and sing and listen, and be part of the event. This will not be notated music, but improvisatory – less about virtuosity and more about community, and how sound is passed from one person or group to another. It will have elements of our pre-rehearsal warm-ups – vowel shaping, blending and departing from blend, pitch variance, and so on. There is a demo recording available through the BCCF website to give the general background of the project, and to help participants prepare. Non-singers – partners or family members – are welcome as well, to carry banners or just to be part of the experience.

Please log in at the BCCF website for further information if you want to take part in any aspect of the performance. We’ll look forward to having you be part of this beautiful and unique community event.

If you have questions, drop me a note at projectmanager@bchoralfed.com

Looking forward to having some of your singers with us

From Morna

As you read in Cathy’s email a few days ago, the board and I decided to simplify things this Friday and save the more social Langley trip for another time when COVID is not still a worry.  Please be sure to keep that September 2 email nearby, as it is an excellent overview of the weeks ahead. Don Blake has also posted it on the “Weekly Announcements” page on enchor.ca

As announced, this Friday, September 9, we will have our first rehearsal of 22/23 at our usual venue at the usual time: the East/West Hall at Pacific Spirit United Church from 10-12.  We will be masked and set up as last spring. Thanks for your help keeping rehearsals safe for all.

Being at PSUC this week allows us to welcome some new faces who are interested in singing with EnChor.  I’ll introduce them to you Friday as they join us for rehearsal, followed by their auditions.

The performance dates for the fall are both Sunday afternoons at PSUC:

  • November 20 – Home and the Heartland
  • December 18 – An EnChor Christmas

Before those, we will spend Friday morning, October 7 audio recording seven Christmas carols for another care home singalong video.  So, expect the fall to have a lively mix of Christmas and non-Christmas music all the way through.  I look forward to introducing some of the new pieces to you this Friday.

I’d like to take a moment to thank John Culter for his work as our librarian and the Section Leaders for their gentle shepherding of you all. Please keep them informed of your attendance plans in the coming months.

Looking forward to seeing you all this Friday and to hearing you sing again!

Greetings from the treasurer!

I hope you’ve all had a good summer, enjoying the sunny, warm weather.   It seems hard to believe it’s September already!  Rehearsals begin again this week and that means ….

…. choir membership fees are now due.  The fees will remain at $350.00 for 2022-2023.   You may pay in one installment, or divide the payments into two installments of $175.00, one payable now and the other payable by the end of January.   Payment can be made by cheque and given to me at rehearsal or mailed to me at the address below. If you prefer to do an e-transfer send it to alderwols@shaw.ca and it will be deposited directly into the EnChor account.

The financial statement for the 2021-2022 year will be sent out before the annual general meeting.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again – both in person and on Zoom!

EnChor Announcements

September 2, 2022

Welcome back!

The summer has flown by and I hope you all have had a relaxing and refreshing few months.

We can all look forward to yet another year of making wonderful music together.

Here are some important dates and information for the year.

COVID PROTOCOLS FOR THE FALL

The EnChor Covid Safety Committee recommended to the board that EnChor continue to require masks at all our rehearsals.  We will have masks available at the front door as usual but the black singer’s mask is no longer available (only white). This policy will be revisited mid-fall to see if we would like to revise it especially in terms of our first concert in November.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9thFIRST REHEARSAL BACK AFTER THE SUMMER

  • 10:00 to 12:00 at Pacific Spirit United Church (usual venue and time)
  • Brown bag lunch social on the grounds of the church
    • It was announced earlier that this rehearsal would be in Langley with a social following at the Wolchok’s house. The board has decided that with the continuing Covid threat the planned social at the Wolchok’s at this time would not be the best idea. Many thanks to Nancy and Garnet for again offering their home to EnChor.
    • For all those who would like to, and feel comfortable doing so, we encourage you to bring a brown bag lunch and maybe a lawn chair and visit on the grounds of the church after this first rehearsal.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16th: REGULAR REHEARSAL FOLLOWED BY MEETING FOR WOMEN ONLY

  • 10:00 to 12:00 at PSUC: Regular rehearsal for everybody
  • 12:00: Brief meeting for women to discuss wardrobe issues

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23RD: REGULAR REHEARSAL WITH SEAMSTRESS IN ATTENDANCE

  • 10:00 to 12:00 at PSUC: Regular rehearsal for everybody
  • Mary, our blue dress seamstress, will be attending the rehearsal from 10:00-12:00 where we will have individual measuring of our dresses for sleeve shortening and any other concerns women may have with their dress.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7thAUDIO RECORDING FOR CARE HOME CHRISTMAS SINGALONG

  • 10:00 to 12:30 at Pacific Spirit United Church (usual venue but in the church)
  • As announced last year, we’ll be making a new singalong video for care homes – this time seven tracks of familiar Christmas carols. The visuals were intended to be us singing together but, due to Covid restrictions and masking, the board has decided to record only audio (together), to which we will add imagery and words. Note the 12:30 release time. If you are not attending all four rehearsals Sept 9, 16, 23, and 30, your Section Leader needs to know so that they and Morna can decide whether or not you should record on October 7.  The repertoire will all be used in December, so do attend all rehearsals you can!

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14TH: REHEARSAL FOLLOWED BY AGM

  • 10:00 to 12:30 at Pacific Spirit United Church (usual venue)
  • The AGM usually lasts no longer than 30 minutes and will be held directly after the rehearsal in the East/West Hall.  Please plan to stay for those few minutes extra and participate in this important event.

FRIDAY OCTOBER 28TH: CHOIR RETREAT

  • 10:00 to 3:00 at Pacific Spirit United Church (usual venue)
  • A lunch will be provided with vegetarian, gluten and dairy free options.

THANK YOU’S

SCOTIABANK/VANCOUVER HALF MARATHON CHALLENGE

Many thanks again to all of you who participated in this year’s fundraising event which started out as the ScotiaBank Challenge but along the way morphed into the Vancouver Half Marathon. Thanks to all your efforts we surpassed our goal of $12,000!

BCCF CHORAL CONDUCTING COURSE

Many thanks to all EnChor members who were able to attend the BCCF Choral de Capo Summer Conducting Course as one of their Lab choirs.  A special thanks to Barry and Valerie for organizing and communicating to make this happen. The BCCF organizers greatly appreciated our participation, and we will be letting them know we are happy to be available next year as well!

NEW ARCHIVIST:

We very much appreciate Pete Chamberlain offering to take on the job as EnChor archivist.  He takes over from Suzanne Finch who we thank very much for doing this for so many years.

Dawne Dye’s Celebration Of Life

Thank you to everybody who was able to attend Dawne’s Celebration of Life last Tuesday.  There were tears, laughter and much music, all of which I think would have met with Dawne’s hearty approval and a perfect way to celebrate the wonderful woman Dawne was.

Many thanks to Pat Hodgins for all the time and work she put into getting it us organized despite some challenges along the way!  Thanks also to Ron for stepping in at the last minute to conduct the group, to Ken for playing the piano for us, and to Evelyn and Ken for the stunningly beautiful Meditation.

In spite of all best organizational efforts, we did forget to confirm the masking policy at the memorial and as such were caught off guard when we were rehearsing and performing with singers who were not masked. Many of us felt very uncomfortable and I’m sorry you were put into such a situation. As we have done for our own concerts, the board will be working to create policies for similar events to ensure every EnChor singer will know the circumstances in which you will be asked to sing beforehand, regarding masking, and other important health and safety concerns.  It is important that every member feels they can make an informed decision about participating in any planned event.

LOOKING TOWARDS THE NEW SEASON!

Covid protocols at rehearsals:

The Enchor Covid Safety Committee will meet in late August to discuss recommendations they will take to the board for consideration for our fall rehearsals. As usual, all Covid recommendations will be reviewed regularly during the season to determine if any changes need to be made.

First Rehearsal:

WHEN: Friday, September 9th, 2022  10:00am to 12:00pm

            WHERE: United Churches of Langley

                                        21562 Old Yale Road Langley

Nancy and Garnet have graciously offered their home for a Choir Social after our first rehearsal and so it was thought a rehearsal in Langley will save some time and driving.

They have a huge outdoor seating area, and a wonderful pool to enjoy on a warm September afternoon.

Lunch will be catered.

More information to come nearer the date.

Christmas Video recording session:  Friday, October 7th, 2022

  • during regular rehearsal hours but in the Sanctuary. More information to come.

EnChor AGM: Friday, October 14th after regular rehearsal

  • please plan to stay for this short meeting

2022-2023 Concert Dates:  All on Sunday afternoons starting at 3:00

            November 20, 2022:  Largely non-Christmas repertoire

December 18, 2022: Probably entirely Christmas with a traditional feel and audience     participation

April 16, 2023:  More information on repertoire to come.

Two letters of thanks from the BCCF

Messages for Willi Zwozdesky, Executive Director of the BCCF and Anita Comba, President of the BCCF

Dear EnChor

On behalf of the BC Choral Federation, I send sincere thanks to EnChor Choir for the generous donation of $500 to the BCCF in support of BCCF services toward choral activity in the province. That EnChor continues to keep the BCCF’s work in mind is very gratifying. The Federation works hard to support choirs everywhere in BC. EnChor is one of a very few who recognize this work with a direct donation. You serve as a model for others to emulate!

Many thanks again for your leadership in this regard!  Please share this message with your membership.
Yours in the BCCF,

Willi Zwozdesky

Dear EnChor

As President of the BCCF I would like to echo Willi’s expression of gratitude.  Indeed, this generous gift is a very affirming show of support and recognition of the work of the BCCF.  We are most grateful!

Sincerely,

Anita Comba

On behalf of the EnChor board, I would like to wish you and yours a relaxing and safe summer break.

Take care and we’ll see you in the fall!

Cheers

From Morna

Looking forward to seeing you all on Friday and to singing through more of our season music as well as Christmas in June!

On my list is the following: The Seal Lullaby, All Through the Night, There Alway Something Sings, Here, O Come All Ye Faithful (new photocopy), and four from “Gerry’s Christmas Songbook”: Away in a Manger, Joy to the World, Deck the Hall, and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. We’ll end the rehearsal singing Rutter’s For the Beauty of the Earth, which some of us will sing at Dawne Dye’s memorial service on June 21.  But everyone might as well have the pleasure of singing that beautiful piece!

Last but not least, the board and I would love to gather your thoughts on the past year together. This little anonymous survey gives you a voice if you have feedback – positive or negative.  Also, we may use some of the positive comments in a newsletter story in early October, so be sure to indicate if we have your permission to include your words.  Again, no names will be attached to comments, but we think it has the makings of a lovely story.

We will stop rehearsing a few minutes early this Friday to facilitate music handing-in.  Please search your home for all possible EnChor music.  And thank you in advance to John C for his duties as Librarian.

See you Friday!

Morna

.

From the Librarian
It’s the end of the Enchor season this week, and time to hand in music for safe-keeping over the summer.

We will do this after the rehearsal, and I’ll put out some tables.  It would be nice to have the music separately by title, but if you need to leave immediately after we sing the Irish Blessing, that’s okay.  Just dump your music on the side table and we’ll look after the sorting later.

We would like everything you have that came from EnChor.  Music, song sheets, Christmas books, inserts, whatever.  If you want to see it again, make sure it’s got your special EnChor number on it.  But we really would like to gather everything this time, if possible.

If you are not coming to rehearsal on Friday, one thing to do would be to drop it off at our place — 3932 West Broadway in Vancouver. But we’re pretty flexible.  Let me know if some other arrangements would be better.  Mobile is 604 908-3119 for messages.

Thanks,

jrc

ScotiaBank Challenge

Many thanks to all the people who are participating in the ScotiaBank Challenge and to those of you who have generously made a donation to one of the teams. To date, we have raised approximately $8500.00, which is great!  However, we did set a goal for ourselves of $12,000.00 and it would be wonderful to reach that objective, or even more!

How can we achieve our goal?  If you are a participant on one of the teams, this might be a good time to send out a reminder to your friends and family of what you are doing, just in case they have forgotten to make that donation.  If you are a choir member and have not done so already, the choir would appreciate any donation you could make to help reach $12,000.00.  To make a donation click HERE

If this Friday is your last day with us for the season, could you please remember to drop off your music after rehearsal?  I’ll be away but Barry Honda, our valued Honorary Assistant Librarian, will be happy to collect it.  It would be a blessing if your music was all marked with your official number and perhaps sorted in alphabetical order.  Staple loose sheets from multipage songs. Please note that this request includes Christmas music, singalongs and song sheets and whatever other material you might have.

Thanks very much!
