FROM MORNA

What a satisfying sing on Sunday afternoon for our concert, The Earth Adorned.  Thank you for your focus and beautiful singing. And to everyone who also helped in non-musical ways (risers, front of house, etc). I look forward to hearing what your friends and family thought when we reconvene this Tuesday, May 6.

CALENDAR DATES (oops)

Sorry for wrong numbers on 2 of the upcoming Tuesdays.  Our rehearsals are: May 6, 13, 20, 27

VSO DAY OF MUSIC

Our focus in May is the 30-minute concert at the VSO Day of Music on Saturday, May 24. I will have the repertoire up in the calendar soon, but bring all your music to all rehearsals anyway, as there will be time for one last sing-through of many things.

Details of our busy afternoon on May 24 downtown are now in the calendar. In addition to the Day of Music concert, we are taking new, formal choir photos immediately following.  Here’s the schedule for the day.  You will want to pay for parking through to at least 5pm.

  • 2:15pm – already dressed in your choir apparel, if possible, enter Christ Church Cathedral by the 690 Burrard Street door and get your VSO-DOM ID badge.  Wait downstairs in the large hall.  Be aware that there will be a concert going on upstairs.
  • 2:30pm – we will be directed upstairs (there is an elevator) for our brief sound check.
  • 3:00pm – 3:30pm – FREE PUBLIC CONCERT
  • 3:50pm – exit the Cathedral via upstairs or down and meet at the 690 Burrard Street door.  We will be instructed as to the exact location of the photo shoot (outdoors at the Cathedral).  It will be helpful to have a few friends and spouses with us to hold purses and fend off the public.
  • 4pm – 4:45pm – photo shoot
  • latest 5pm release time

TONY DAVIES’ CELEBRATION OF LIFE

Tony’s Celebration of Life is set for Saturday, May 31 from 2-5pm at Quilchena Golf Club in Richmond. All members of EnChor are invited but not required. As choral singing was so important in Tony’s life, Jane Fernyhough, Tony’s partner, is working with Brigid Coult, conductor of the Richmond Chorus, with which Tony sang for many years, to plan a short choral set to be sung by members of both us and RC. I am included in that conversation. The singing will likely take place around 3pm. As I have an Elektra concert at 4pm, I will – very sadly – not be available, but Brigid could conduct an EnChor solo piece and RC would then do the same.  If we find we don’t have a balanced/sufficient group from EnChor coming, both choirs will sing only straightforward rep together (The Seal Lullaby is one under consideration) and we will have time to work on this music on Tuesday mornings. The plan is to have a joint pre-event rehearsal under Brigid’s direction at 1pm on May 31 in a nearby church venue.

I know that many of you have tickets for the 4pm Elektra concert the same day at Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Vancouver. I have cleared it with Bea Orbegoso, Elektra’s Managing Director, that EnChor and Richmond Chorus members who would like to either get a refund or switch their May 31 tickets to the 3pm South Surrey performance on Sunday, May 25 may do so.  Email Bea at managingdirector@elektra.ca with your ticket order number and your name, and explaining whether you want to switch or get a refund.  The deadline to request any changes is Friday, May 16.

To help us with music planning, please complete this short survey in the next day or two about attending Tony’s service..

EnChor Birthdays

Birthdays!  You either love em’ or hate em’!  At the May 6 rehearsal Deborah Mehes, Barry Honda and Cathy B. will be coming around asking for your birthdays – including the year you were born. We are doing this so that as EnChor singers reach a significant birthday (80, 85, 90, etc) we can make sure this special milestone is acknowledged by the choir in some way.  Of course, if you would prefer not to share your birthday that is fine too.  Just let Barry, Deborah or Cathy know when we approach you.

Sunshine Person – Would you be interested?

The Board also thought that in conjunction with celebrating special birthdays, we should reinstate a Sunshine person.  This person would keep track of the birthdays, and when a significant one came along they would work with the board to decide how best to honour it.  They also would be the ‘go-to’ person in the choir for those of us who hear about a fellow choir member being ill, losing a loved one, or otherwise in distress. Of course some of us prefer to keep such issues private, but the choir would like people to know we are thinking of them, if they are comfortable with that.

On the flip side, the Sunshine Person would also send out congratulations to an EnChor Member for whom something extra special as occurred (maybe a 50th Wedding Anniversary?).

If you would be willing to take this service on for the choir or would simply like more information please contact Cathy Bayley at cathybayley55@gmail.com.

More from Cathy

Many of you probably read the NYTs and have seen this already. But just in case I thought I’d share it as I think it really speaks to EnChor’s philosophy.

FROM MORNA

Thank you for your focus and good singing on Tuesday as we recorded those four pieces, and special thanks to Barry Honda for his excellent recorder playing and Don Harder for recording us.

Looking forward to Tuesday, when we will continue to put finishing touches on our repertoire for Sunday, April 27, which is coming up fast.  See the weekly rehearsal grid.

Last Tuesday, I handed out the two singalongs for April 27: With a Little Help from my Friends and What a Wonderful World.  This is sheet music, not just words, although we are singing in unison.  I thought that would make you more confident leaders of the audience!  If you were not there Tuesday, make sure I give those to you this week.

And now it’s time to think about friends and family who might enjoy hearing us in our spring concert, The Earth Adorned.  I think it’s going to be a great show! And a chance to win a fabulous raffle prize.

FROM MORNA

Wow – EnChor came through in spades this week hosting the BC Choral Federation’s first Seniors’ ChorFest since before the pandemic.  I think Erica was just the right conductor for us, and I had fun singing tenor! Had lots of good chats with people from other parts of the province.  “Thanks” is simply not enough to acknowledge the amazing and tireless work of our ChorFest Committee: Nancy, Trish, Deborah, Barb, Margaret, and of course the amazing organizer, Kathie.  Your commitment to make this event wonderful shone through in everything.  And let’s not forget John Smit who, with his son and other helpers, got the risers from Pacific Spirit, transported them to White Rock, set them up, and did the whole thing in reverse at the end, all while putting in the same two full days of singing as the rest of us. John, you are so valued in this choir!  You were joking that new singers need to be “riser-capable”.  I will bear that in mind!

I’m happy to report that most of you indicated strong interest in performing at Choral Canada’s Podium conference in Victoria in May 2026 if we are accepted. To that end, this Tuesday, Don Harder is going to bring his recording equipment, and we will capture some of the concert rep.  The Podium deadline is before our concert, therefore we can’t just use a concert recording.

Please bring all your current repertoire, although I hope to stick to my plan. There is a slight chance another April 27 piece will need to be recorded.

Rest well and see you Tuesday!

FROM CHRIS SALLIS

Canadian Renaissance Music Summer School

Once again, the Canadian Renaissance Music Summer School (CRMSS, aka ‘Crumbs’) is providing an intensive and very inspiring week of singing and even playing polyphonic music from the Renaissance.  These are not just fun madrigals; it’s mostly about learning and performing sacred and secular works by Byrd, Palestrina, etc., this year focusing on English Renaissance composers.  There is a lot of sight-reading and excellent instruction, even one-on-one.  If you are interested, please visit their website:  https://crmss.org

Dates:  August 10-17
Place:  St. Helen’s Parish, Burnaby
Cost:  $650; $450 for students; $125 for consort or keyboard players

FROM MORNA

A busy choral week ahead!

As I hope everyone is aware, I added back in the Tuesday, April 8 regular rehearsal so we will have time on our repertoire.  If you have put other things onto that morning and can’t come, I understand. Hoping most people will make it. We will also run our ChorFest solo set, which is performed Thursday night.

Here’s what we will rehearse Tuesday morning:

Locus Iste

Fire, Air, Earth, & Water

Bogoroditse

Danny Boy

Dirait-on

Live with Me and Be My Love (with clarinet if Garnet is available)

You Make Me Feel So Young

Your Soul is Song

The three last pieces on that list are our solo set at ChorFest.

None of the ChorFest massed choir repertoire is being done that morning, so if you are still iffy on the Cree language or anything else for those five pieces (see calendar), please do the work before Wednesday on your own.

We decided that, on the Thursday night ChorFest concert, we will wear our formal uniforms: blue dresses for the women and tuxes for the men. Please check now that everything is ready to pack with you.  We will get changed at the dinner break. Other than that, dress for the 2 days of rehearsals is casual and as you like.

I have two tickets to Saturday night’s Brahms Requiem concert in Richmond by the Richmond Chorus and Vivaldi Chamber Choir that I can no longer use.  Free to anyone who would like to email me to ask.

Have a great weekend and see  most of you Tuesday morning.

FROM MORNA

A second message from me this week as I forgot some things. Thanks for reading and responding to yet another survey!

April 27 concert “The Earth Adorned”

Armed with my new idea about doing some of the April concert scrambled and some in sections, I have revised the concert order.  I also realized there were some pieces coming up in the weekly rehearsal grid that we really don’t need to sing in the next month.  So please DOWNLOAD AND REFER TO THE  NEW WEEKLY REHEARSAL GRID.  You can find it in the Members’ area of the website. Another reason this grid will be useful is that it shows the repertoire in the new concert order.

Possibility of Applying to Perform at National Choral Conference in May 2026 in Victoria – PLEASE COMPLETE THIS 1-MINUTE SURVEY RIGHT AWAY

Applications are currently being accepted for choirs to apply to perform at Podium 2026, the biennial national conference of Choral Canada, taking place May 14-17, 2026 in Victoria.  This is the meeting of conductors, composers, publishers, singers, etc.  It’s where we meet old friends and find out about the vibrancy of the choral field in this vast country.  The conference moves to a different province every two years, so it will not be as affordable to get to for EnChor for many years. I think it would be wonderful for us to apply to perform. Each singer would be covering their own costs. Student residences at U Vic should be available but you can also upgrade yourself to a hotel if you like!

The application deadline is coming up in 3 weeks, and we will only apply if I have a strong and balanced ensemble.  PLEASE COMPLETE THIS SURVEY TODAY IF POSSIBLE.

Thank you!

FROM MORNA

Tuesday I am going to have one seating plan for the first half of the rehearsal (sections) and another for the second (in 2s and 3s). My thinking is that we might do this in the concert, making the switches after the singalongs.  When you enter the rehearsal space, please put your coat and other non-essentials over on the side pews to make moving around easier.  I will re-do the board at break.  May the Force be with us all!

Elektra’s Saturday, May 31 afternoon Legacy concert at Christ Church Cathedral (my last) has only about 30 tickets left. Just sayin’!  Tickets for May 31 will probably be gone by the end of the weekend. There is plenty of room at the South Surrey performance of the same program on the afternoon of Sunday, May 25. Exciting!

See you Tuesday.

I’ll start reimbursing the $115 we each paid for Chorfest after Chorfest is over, and will have all reimbursements done by April 17.

If you would like your reimbursement sooner, please email me directly at trishsmith955@outlook.com.
