Both Sides Now
Both Sides Now brings together masterworks of the a cappella repertoire, contemporary Canadian music, and songs shaped by reflection and connection. EnChor will be joined by acclaimed collaborative pianist Stephen Smith in a program that moves between music of enduring beauty and newer works with a distinctly Canadian voice.
The program includes Duruflé’s Ubi Caritas and Tallis’s If Ye Love Me, alongside Christine Donkin’s Lookout, a work EnChor co-commissioned with 16 other Canadian choirs through a Choral Canada initiative. Inspired by the fire lookout towers once found across rural Canada, Lookout reflects on places and ways of life transformed by time and changing technology. At the heart of the concert is an a cappella arrangement of Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now.
EnChor is joined by Nabi Vocal Ensemble, a 47-voice ensemble of young adults conducted by former EnChor UBC Scholarship recipient Tyler Baek. The two choirs will come together for I Sit Before Flowers, conducted by Baek, with a soloist from Nabi Vocal Ensemble.
Smith will also step into the spotlight with a solo piano selection.
The collaboration reflects EnChor’s ongoing commitment to encouraging and supporting future generations of musicians, while bringing together singers at different stages of their musical lives.
